A letter of recommendation is a letter or completed form that provides information about you. It is written by someone who knows you well. A letter of recommendation is usually written by an employer, a teacher, counselor, or administrator. It should be someone who knows you well, and will generally be supportive of you and your goals. Letters of recommendation are often needed with college applications, job applications or interviews, scholarships, and similar situations where a school or company needs to learn about your personality, work ethic, and general abilities.

The student who wants a letter of recommendation usually requests it in person, or by phone. Because people can have busy schedules, it is important that you give a reasonable amount of time to complete your letter of recommendation. Therefore, always request a letter of recommendation at least two to three weeks prior to when you actually need the letter. DO NOT wait until the last minute! Be prepared to provide updated personal information that might assist the writer and remind him/her of your accomplishments, abilities, and goals. It is customary and considerate to provide an addressed envelope with postage, if the letter of recommendation is to be mailed by the writer. It is also appropriate and to write a brief thank you note, a day or so after your letter of recommendation is completed.

For the purpose of Reseda High School Senior Portfolios, each senior student should have a minimum of two and maximum of five letters of recommendation included in the portfolio. The letters can be typed letters or to make the process a bit easier, a Letter of Recommendation Form can be used. The downloadable letter of recommendation form can be completed in about ten to fifteen minutes. The online form is just as easy to complete.
